Belinda Schumacher Professor Fogle July 5, 2016 As Americans, we are taught that fighting for our rights is something that we have had to continuously through history. From the American Revolution, to the Civil War, to the Women s suffrage movement of the 20’s, there has always been some sort of right. However, as we as Americans got closer to the new millennium, the fight for basic rights became a little more intense. It was no longer us as Americans fighting a common enemy such as England, it was now Americans vs Americans. Multiple issues such as gun laws and religion have separated the United States since its creation. Though recently, the main issue that has caused a divide in the American population is the issue of gay marriage.†¦show more content†¦For 5o years, it has been one step forward and two steps back. In 1924 the Society for Human Rights was founded by Henry Gerber in Chicago. This was the first gay rights organization documented at that time. After creation, the society published the first documen ted publication for homosexuals called Friendship and Freedom. The Society for Human Rights didn’t last too long however, and they disbanded shortly after creation because it faced quite a bit of political pressure.Fast forward to November of 1950. A Los Angeles gay rights activist Harry Hay founded America’s first national organization for gay rights called the Mattachine Society. The purpose of this was to â€Å"eliminate discrimination, derision, prejudice and bigotry†. Their aim was to start the acceptance of gay culture into the modern world. In 1969, in New York City, the Stonewall riots sparked a worldwide protest on the behalf of gay rights everywhere. Early morning of June 28th, police raided the Stonewall Inn, which was a popular gay bar. At this point in time due to legislation, homosexual sex was illegal in every single state except Illinois. That police raid was the beginning of a six day protest. This six day protest was a major turning turning poi nt in the gay rights movement. Raids at the Stonewall Inn were a regular occurrence, and typically the raid resulted in a few arrests, and the bar closing
